That does not work. In order to get an FAA type rating you must complete an "approved course" from a FAR Part 142 training center prior to the type rating check. That is a lot more than 5 hours typically. So to answer Fred, the way to do it is go to someone like Pan Am and find out what their shortest approved course is for the B777. Boeing had previously had a 61.157 accelerated course that was a 7 or 8 day training footprint. There is also their "short course", which is a 15 day footprint.

Remember too, to get an FAA type rating one must pass an FAA oral. FAA orals are not easy. They take a lot of study to properly prepare for. Recently at the Boeing center in Singapore an experienced Australian B777 captain who was trying to become a simulator instructor failed his FAA oral in spectacular fashion. This is not uncommon for someone who has never done an FAA oral before and does not get proper guidance on how to prepare for it.
