From the number of mistakes I see in US papers it is apparent that there are no copy editors (or fact checkers).
In this case it's not just the lie / lay confusion, it's the odd grammar and word choice from the first line ("Fell off from a cabin door") to the last paragraph ("Do crosscheck")
And that's before we even get to the facts; the article states in more than one place that "the plane was ready to take off" when the photos seem to show it at the gate.
