JASDF F-4s use a license built version of the J79-GE-17, in the late 70s early 80s, a smokeless mod was introduced for the -10 (USN/USMC only) -15 (USAF only) and -17 (USAF and foreign operators). The Luftwaffe F-4F/RF-4E also had license built versions of the -17 but, the smokeless mod was a 'war only' option to reduce the increased engine wear associated with the smokeless mod (higher combustion/exhaust temperature).
