I have to ask, considering all the debate about what sort of magenta line SID was either given, entered or followed; is it not still the responsibility of a crew not to follow said magenta line into a dangerous place. i.e. navigation in a critical area below MSA needs to be monitored closely. KISS.
This is not smart-ass stuff just basic airmanship. I have had occasions where the automatics were wanting to take my a/c where I did not feel comfortable with. I didn't let it, but slapped its wrist, firmly. I wonder if this comes from having grown up on a diet of needles & dials. It educates you to draw a 3d map in your mind and follow where you are & where you are going. Even at higher levels, near mountains, it is comforting to know where the high & low stuff is below you. From TOD with high ground between you and the airfield, a 3d picture is more complete and cosy than just a mix of number of minimum combining altitudes & DME's.
I wonder if some are missing the wood for the trees.
