HK Express chief’s future in doubt after flight cancellation chaos ahead of holiday period

Budget airline has been plunged into turmoil after sudden flight cancellations caused chaos for thousands of holidaymakers

The boss of a budget airline is facing an uncertain future, with some sources claiming he has been sacked, after a string of cancelled flights to and from Hong Kong caused chaos before a busy holiday period.

Hong Kong Express Airways’ chief executive officer Andrew Cowen did not deny rumours he had been fired on Wednesday and said he would release a statement soon.

One source close to HK Express said Cowen was out of the top job but could stay on in a different capacity, while another source said the chief executive officer was unlikely to stay on if offered a more junior role.

A wider management reshuffle is expected to take place, with one change already made. Human resources director, Christopher Thomas, was replaced by Stanley Yau – a counterpart at sister company Hong Kong Airlines – on Wednesday.
