I agree entirely with your first point. I wish FLARM/PowerFLARM was open source and everyone could use it more cheaply.
On your second point, however, you get lots, really lots, of warning that the software will need to be updated. And, for PowerFLARM at least, and you can download it for free onto a mini SD card for about a month before the deadline.
