OF: The way it was explained to me was that it is sensible to have a 'standard' checklist so that it works whether you're flying a fixed gear aircraft or a retractable gear aircraft. If your checklist includes a 'gear' item and you happen to be flying a fixed gear aircraft, there's no downside and all upside in confirming "fixed and welded". You might be flying a retractable the next day...
