As this was the Cold War period I speculated as to what was going on.

WRT Radio Caroline, my then crush was called Caroline, so I listened with fervour.
I was given a hand to build the crystal set originally, from a Polish friend of my fathers, who worked at the Martin Baker factory at the end of our road. I was around 8 or 9 (so around 1960/61) when he showed me how to wind a coil around the cardboard tube from an old toilet roll, and solder together the components on to brass tacks nailed to a bit of board. IIRC, he gave me the headphones, too, with their cotton-covered cable. I kept that crystal set for years, until I was given a "proper" transistor radio when I was around 14.
