Luton and Stansted offer virtually nothing to the potential traveller leisure or business, that can't be done effectively and at similar cost none stop from Manchester.
Southend without doubt serves Essex and again as previously pointed out - the Eastern industrial areas of the capital quite nicely.
Dagenham, Thurrock Basildon are heaving with SMEs that make and sell real things into the heated London economy, and many have their manufacturing in the North West .
There ARE real and tangible business opportunities if marketed correctly
