I see, my point of view is: "IMC" is not ICAO and not "legal" outside UK. So what's the point? better to go directly to an instrument course.
IR costs more and you have to do all those exams. Unless you're going commercial - when you have to have the Multi/IR - then the JAA IR is out of reach of most people. The FAA IR, on the other hand...

Has anyone undertaken an ATPL distance learning course AFTER the CPL/MECR/IR?
This wouldn't work, although I guess you could do it. At a minimum you need the CPL theory exams before the CPL skills test and the IR theory exams before the IR test. At best this would be only very slightly less work than the ATPL exams (and possibly more), it would be more expensive (CPL theory+ IR theory costs more than ATPL theory) and then I think you would have to do the ATPL exams again afterwards because you only had the CPL exam credits..
