Pontious, With the greatest respect, we are not "back in the day".
Assets such as squadrons of Typhoon and P8 will have pretty good security these days. Yes, large Civvi airfields have reasonable security against background criminality but, the levels of security required for a permanent operational Military airfield are considerable and expensive.
