Intersection departure

Hello,

I was wondering whether or not it is required to recieve a specific clearance in order to perform an intersection departure. For example, if ATC tells me "ABC123 taxi holding point runway 01" can I choose whichever intersection I want without notifying ATC prior to reaching it, or do i need to taxi all the way down the runway unless i ask for an intersection?
