Thanks for your comments. Makes sense now as they refused any sort of compensation i.e. lounge passes, upgrades, by blaming the weather. Not much can be done other than take the alternative, claim the EU compensation and then never fly BA again.
If they'd said "industrial action" then that would have been truthful and slightly more acceptable but put them up as the reason.
