I have never heard much talk about noise abatement in surface warships. UK hunter killers in the 1980s would routinely be able to detect US warships leaving port from the UK side of the Atlantic on their passive "waterfall" displays. They could even type identify them.

I think this is all a bit of a herring rouge.
