THIS IS NOT A CAPTION.
PN (#40873),
In "
Im West nicht neues" ("All Quiet on the Western Front" to us), Remarque tells a WWI story of Gernan troops who were camped on one side of a French canal. On the other side was a village where the womenfolk were suffering the pangs of man-deprivation.
The arrangement was that the Germans stripped off to the buff, hung their boots round their necks, and swam across, where the eager "Mademoisellesfrom Armentières - inky-pinky parlez-vous" were waiting to warm them up.
Had to get back across and get dry before "Reveille" (or Wehrmacht equivalent thereof), I suppose.
Hitler had the book banned as pacifist propaganda.
