I've found that adjusting the manual gain seems to be quite useful. Setting it to full makes it show anything that might possibly be there. It seems to do a perfect job of ground clutter suppression.
I've foolishly trusted it a few times when it hasn't shown anything in front of us but there is a small TCU in front of us we can see out of the window. The cabin was secure so decided to give the weather radar the benefit of the doubt as it didn't show anything on the screen. The resulting TCU gave us light to moderate turbulence and a bit of light icing which we would have rather avoided. Other than that I have found it pretty good. It did a great day on a nasty canaries trip full of isolated embedded throughout the whole descent. I have also seen it detect lightning when there is none, not sure how it predicts it but the ADF seems more reliable!!!
