The 777 rumour has been around for some time, and the 787 stay seems to have been a catalyst for it emerging.
As far as I know there is no solid foundation. However, there are some indisputable facts that provide underlying rationale for the rumour.
Chief among them is that whilst the aviation market at MAN is booming, the principle looser out of this is the BA brand (IAGs position is up for debate) with the collapsing shuttle traffic. Combating this by making use of a number of essentially paid off assets seems to be a fairly sensible strategy, which may also keep VS in check and make it harder for them to realise their ambitions at MAN.
Conjecture at this point, but there is reason to beleive something is afoot.
