over the years Ethiopian have made a very nice living connecting to various parts of Africa and the Middle East that are hard to get to - prices to African destinations tend to be a lot higher than say trans-Atlantic of Europe - ME flights.
I also guess they can offer a much shorter route China-Abbas- Africa cp going via LHR
