It will be a long way off before EDI needs a 3rd runway. One good thing about the EDI plans is that it is mainly farmland which will be needed. LHR R3 is going to have to destroy villages, displacing hundreds of people (perhaps more), rerouting motorways and other major roads and railway lines too. EDI won't have any of that, from looking at maps today there are just a few farm houses and a garden centre which would need to be razed and a few country roads removed. It won't please everyone, but there is not as strong a case to oppose it on the same grounds as LHR. Unless of course the farmland which is currently there is deliberately sold to developers in a bid to disrupt the airports growth, which I can see happening. EDI need to snap up the land as and when it becomes available.
