"Gungho-ism" doesn't come into it - they aren't breaking any rules.
And if the opportunity arose tomorrow to sit in the cockpit for a flight AMS-NCL, I'd stay at home.
"I'm not breaking any rules - I can do what I like here" is
not an attitude that will aid flight safety. Nor will the attitude shown by the second sentence of yours that I quoted.
