For advanced aircraft, FTD's and Sims provide training opportunities and achieve standards of proficiency that cannot be obtained in a real aircraft.
We have however not yet reached the stage where CPL and ATP licences are obtained entirely in a simulator without an hour of real flying.
That said, Drones already operate and its only a matter of time before they carry passengers.
