Track Crawling gets it done.

The military (air force) teach the 1:60 method which is fine for medium level nav. A little less practical at lower levels. The Army use track crawling for basic low level nav.

1. Draw a line on the map.

2. Identify feature on track.

3. fly to it.

Repeat steps 2-3 until you get to your destination. Works very well as long as you can identify landmarks. If terrain is too barren, clock-map-ground almost foolproof.
