You are far more likely to have good things to say about them than if they'd kept your money and, as I'm sure you're aware, the aviation world is so small that a student pilot now may well end up with more influence over a company's name in the future.
My suggestion, no longer needed of course, is that you try and contact another potential student and have your deposit transferred to their account while they write you a cheque for something similar (if not the same). Maybe you could use that next time
