Not sure who told you that - the small company managing it is based in Germany, true.
Maps are available all across Europe - I have used it in NL, BE, IT, AT, SI and CH so far myself.
A package includes updating for a year, but the maps remain functional thereafter.
For me the combination with PC-based Flight Planner - with FPLs sent over internet to device taken on flight (phone, tablet, IOS/Android) comes handy. I still prefer to work on a proper sreen with mouse rather than on a 7'' touchscreen.
Also very easy to create a paper backup with overview charts, waypoint chartlets, approach plates, NOTAMS and flight plan form from Flight Planner..
I cannot compare it for functionality and utility with SD for lack of experience, but so far it has served me well.
