"It hadn't gone back up into the undercarriage. We called over one of the cabin crew who couldn't believe it. She informed the captain who made an announcement"
At least he told the Cabin crew of a potential problem but I rather suspect that the gear having not been raised would suggest that the flight deck all ready knew what had happend.
