Try experimenting with the Variable Gain. Pop it just out of the detent, and pretty well everything that might Ice you (significantly) shows up.
If the whole screen is amber, put it back in the detent ...
Keep the range down. In bad weather I keep it at 25 Miles most of the time, and crank it out every couple of minutes for a few sweeps to keep an eye on the big picture.
