Apparently the people who applied last yr got an automatic rejection, but that was just because the job ad closed (doesn't necessarily mean they are out). Hope this is the case for him.

Nah, he applied in May.
I told him of your experience in hope he can maybe contact someone and get back in the game just like you. But that wasn't the case.
He wrote to them to ask what happened 'cause he just can't wrap his head around it. He knows both his referees so well and he's a million % sure it had nothing to do with them.
The answer he received said they have too many applications to provide individual reasons for each rejection and they encourage him to reapply after 12months.
I'm now opening my email every single day with eyes wide shut hoping to hear from them, yet not wanting to hear from them 'cause I'm afraid it can still be a rejection letter.
