I wouldn't go as far as to say 'your eat your hat if it does materialise', the aviation industry is a strange one for example who would have believed that MAN would have gained a Houston link by Singapore Airlines so a MAN-DTW isn't as far fetched as you make out!
I would suggest you buy en edible hat though.
