They did when they came out of Stores - but that was soon remedied. "Betty Grable" (you won't remember) shorts were the order of the day. Your Dad would have his tailored (about a rupee for the cloth to be made up into a pair of shorts to measure) by the
dherzi in the local bazaar.
I do not suppose your fellow passenger was unduly perturbed. The
lingam is a revered Hindu symbol and temple carvings make it abundantly clear.
