In the old days under the CAA CPL/ATPL ground school exams this was the exam that has been replaced with the JAA performance exam. For me perf A was a bi##*, lots of graphs etc not my thing. Lucky students on new system. In order to pass the techs you could however do for example perf E which was much simpler to get the pass then upgrade to perf A when required.
