BA only started Gatwick to Cape Town because Thomas Cook announced they were entering the market. BA has launched it to protect market share. It was never planned until Thomas Cook made their intentions known.
Incidentally, Avios have a lot more seats available from Heathrow to Cape Town than they do from Gatwick.
