I wouldn't say that BA are operating LGW to CPT just because Thomas Cook are, BA know the passenger figures from London to Cape Town and therefore decided to operate LGW to CPT which is aimed at the Avios crowd like myself as well as BA Holidays.
If BA was that interested in competing with others on long haul out of LGW surely they would have added flights to more destinations in the USA other than JFK to combat the growth of Norwegian but they haven't.
BA are not stupid as they know what routes are viable otherwise they wouldn't contemplate operating them as with long haul ex MAN where they are not interested which is a shame but that's how it is.
