One thing to bear in mind on the Metrolink question is that the trams serve communities all along the route - customers joining or leaving the service at the Airport itself do not determine the overall economics of the operation. Stops such as Wythenshawe Town Centre supply a much higher proportion of passenger journeys than the airport stop for example, but all contribute to the viability of the operation as a whole.
