I don't think they are writing it off, Shed, but it's way off projections. I'm rather bemused to see that economic conditions are being blamed (which have in truth been very benign and may deteriorate) whilst conveniently forgetting the fact that MAN has been booming for the last few years. Some posters are complaining about the ticket price (I tend to agree) whilst security appears to be a concern. I must admit to having felt wary off peak, rail with conductors is much preferable in my book. From my previous research, Metrolink to MAN was aimed more at employees rather than passengers. I wonder if staff car park space may become harder to find......
