rutankrd if you or anyone else thinks my £5000+ worth of camera gear which fits neatly into a backpack weighing 6.8 kilos and has travelled all over the world with me is going into any aircraft hold, you have another think coming. The hold IS the place for luggage but a combination of loaders who sling bags into containers, and in any order, and ever increasing hold luggage charges ensure that only my suitcase goes under the floor.
Actually i quite understand with your concern especially with specialist equipment such as camera/video/audio equipment.
As for charges well I think they should actually be reversed !
A set weight in hold included in ticket price by legislation however additional carryon (Your camera equipment for instance) charged and insured for after all thats has a real cost in time and processing and hand searching through security !
As for your comments re the elder statesmen that ensured Ringways success think we agree on that.
The last seven years or so haven't been the best for resilient development strategies , yet heavier and heavier government enforced
must be seen to be doing something security requirements have seriously effected the structural operations of many airport buildings.
Such as multiple screening even of domestic and EU traffic , segregation of arriving and departing passengers.
IMO Those requirements and the necessary structural changes should have been paid for out of taxation (ADP) at the dedicated airports !
