If you don't want to go to the expense of travelling home and flying the sim, maybe change the state of licence issue? I changed mine from UK to Irish for this very reason. The Irish put my current (on an ICAO licence) type on the EASA licence, and each year I send them my training records. They then send me a new piece of paper with the extended validity for free.
The rating states 'only valid on aircraft registered in XYZ country', but it does keep everything EASA current.
