P8 - Poseidon vs Nimrod
The RAF is to acquire these B737 based craft to replace Nimrod.
Reading the Tech pages, it is clear that tankering fuel is not an efficient way to fly long distances (hence the demise of the Singapore-JFK non-stop route with an A340-500).
The Nimrod was able to shut down two engines and hang around for a long period monitoring whatever it needed to monitor. Can't shut down two engines on a P8.... and in any event, aren't these planes designed to operate most efficiently at about 0.8M. Presumably Nimrod flew at a much lower speed to 'hang around'.
So is this an intelligent choice, Hobson's choice or what?
