This was used for weather reconnaissance after which attacks could be brought up if conditions were right. On one mission Sqn. Ldr. Gill was returning from a recce and saw two Japanese Ki-43 'Oscar' aircraft flying opposite him and overhead. He flew into cloud, turned and sighted one enemy aircraft ahead, closed to 100-200 yards and shot it down with 20mm cannon fire. AOC 221 Group was displeased as he had gone beyond the territorial area for weather recce and threatened to take the Spitfire away if he did it again.
