I would check to see how much RAM you have installed, as apparently you need 8GB for El Capitan to work on 'older' MBP's……The newer MBP's have faster chips naturally, and so this isn't an issue with them. At lower levels of RAM, 4GB for example, the OS stutters and stops depending on how heavily the system is being used.
