Not wanting to stand up for the BBC but from my experience over the years of working for them, with a live outside broadcast such as the London Marathon or Great North Run being so complex, I think that having the correct helicopter sound effect is probably low on their priorities, I think we should be grateful we have any helicopter sound effects at all.
I'll point it out to the powers that be and hopefully for The Great North Run coverage in September they will have the correct effect.
One other point to remember is that the sound mixer sitting in the OB truck is usually totally unaware of the type of aircraft being used on any given broadcast and therefore simply uses a generic helicopter sound effect.
