MPN, Ty, how about personal allowance?
PN, they manage to make it incredibly complicated here, but I think we get £26,100 tax-free* ... but that allowance is for us both, as wife's income is included with mine. UK appears to be £11,000 (each?).
* Other allowances also exist.
