system32\config\system error

I have an old computer which ran on XP that I can no longer access. Most things on the hard drive are safely backed up but a few bits remain that I would like to get off but of course I cannot get in. Tried a recovery disc - didn't work and do not have original installation discs.

The computer will be heading to the skip anyway. am I better off removing the hard disk and putting it in a hard disc enclosure (they seem really cheap) or is it worth spending money trying to get someone to fix the fault so I can just copy off what I want.

Sorry if it is a dumb question but I am not so good at these confuser thingies....!
