Don't know about Tonka's .. but on the Herc you probably refer to the (in)famous "columbo pack" ... in flight rations out of said area were "banned" as the catering establishment was decreed "not to standard" .. so all transit flights carried a large box of long life items ... biscuits/sealed pate/sealed cheese (rubber)/crisps/chocolate etc etc on which to survive. When the Falklands happened, and the catering out of Dakar was declared "unfit" the "columbo pack" re-emerged. IIRC A senior officer complained about a lack of "hot" food, and the next trip the packs included pot noodles - equally tastless but hot .. although some co-pilots seemed to love them ... no accounting for taste ...
