I remember once, over the South Downs in a 172 (Sandown - Blackbushe) on a very hot, thermally day, getting in an updraft, and still going up on the VSI with throttle at idle
Still, as others have said, it's good to fly when it's a bit rough every so often, to make sure you can cope with it (wouldn't call it fun, though)
