Nope, no need for a current class rating, just get some refresher training and do the ME/IR prof check renewal, it's a little cheaper and shorter.
As for the place the check takes place I am unsure but as long as the examiner is briefed and operated to the examiner differences document they should accept the paperwork.
Bear in mind though some EASA states may want you to have a current class rating however you can renew both at the same time.
