During the 1830s there seems to have been a resurgence in 'religion' and rich benefactors emerged to finance the reconstruction of many fine buildings as we see them today.
On visiting a country church (Milbourne Port near Henstridge), the vicar told me that in Victorian times the churches were going up at such a rate that there were 50% more church pews available than there were bottoms to fill them.
