I used Microsoft Flight Sim X (£5 used copy from eBay) with a £15 joystick.
Spent a number of hours on it before my first IR renewal, and again before my sim check for my first airline interview. Passed both without a problem.
It might not be the same for everyone, but in my opinion a "real" sim is not worth the extra time and money.
