It's understandable companies wish to reduce costs and employ Rated pilots but, as has been stated, it doesn't mean you get the best or most suitable pilots. As long as you read up on the HR babble i.e. 'how did you influence a Captains decision' etc most can get through an interview. Companies, including Virgin, are missing out on good short haul or highly trained fast jet pilots.
To get into long haul you must have some sort of history; in the old days a couple of high recommendations would get you an interview (conversely if you weren't rated, and i don't mean type, then a 'Dear John' letter appeared).
Good luck to all those trying to climb the ladder.
