The BEA report says repeatedly that the FD initial automatic engagement modes were HDG + VS climb.

"2h 10 min 47
The FD 1 and 2 become available
again (modes HDG/ VS).
The selected heading is 34°.
The vertical speed is 1,500 ft/min.
