Just a quick comment: I live right near the border on the german side. Not too far from Schengen, actually. We just completed our weekly shopping trip to a nearby french supermarket. We crossed the border at two different locations by car. All was completely normal. No unusual activities visible. Just like you would go from Ohio to Indiana and back.
